Meals starting from RM200 per month, this price include 3 healthy, non-MSG dishes delivered to your home daily from Monday - Friday, excluding public holidays.

Tiffin rates:-
• 1 pax = RM200 per month (20 deliveries)
• 2 pax = RM380 per month (20 deliveries)
• 3 pax = RM560 per month (20 deliveries)
• 4 pax = RM720 per month (20 deliveries)

Delivery rates:-
• Delivery charge RM20/month
• FOC for self collection from Solaris Mont Kiara

Price quoted are based on meals for 20 days in a month.

Rice can be delivered for an extra RM1.50 per serving.

Being a Stay-at-home-Mum (SAHM) that has an infant permanently attached to her presents problems of a very basic kind. For example, while I'm busy making sure my son is well-fed every 3-3.5 hours, how am I going to settle my own lunch & dinner? I have no time to cook, or even if I were able to squeeze in the time to cook, buying groceries is inconvenient, nay virtually impossible, because I'd have to lug little Daniel about (and he's so fragile, he can't even hold his neck up yet!)

So Husband & I decided to try this "tingkat" catering service. Basically, meals are delivered to your doorstep in tall metal containers (called tingkats). You can order 4 dishes or 3 dishes + 1 soup; and the meals are different every day for a fairly long time, so you don't get tired of the same food over and over again.

Here is a pic of our very first tingkat meal, which we received today.

The verdict? Well, it certainly wasn't gourmet cuisine, but it was decent (not too oily, tasty and fresh). Thank God for tingkat catering - otherwise poor mums like me would be starving to death (or subject to oily hawker food every day!) YAY.

Food or Tiffin Carriers

I have arranged all these tiffin carriers in a chronological order from antique (Raymond Kwok) to modern (source : ebay) in anti clockwise manner. They are as dear to my heart, as a Foochow or Chinese woman, as to any Asian woman in this world.

When a Chinese woman sees a tiffin carrier,like any of these, her heart would definitely miss a bit because it is one kitchen item that she cannot do without, unless she is totally unskilled in the kitchen.

Here are some stories I would like to share with you.

Once there was a young man who had sent his wife to the Lau King Howe Hospital to await their first born and then went to work. The hospital later telephoned his mother that the baby was soon to be born. His mother quickly slaughtered the best female chicken (must be female according to traditions)and boiled it in the simple Foochow style, which we call Bak Kong (Plain boil). This was very nourishing for a woman who had just given birth. She then placed the chicken soup in the bottom tray or layer of a tiffin carrier and placed some rice in another layer. she also placed two hard boiled eggs at the top layer. In this way, the chicken soup would keep the rice and the eggs warm. when it was known that the baby was just about to be born the mother sent the young husband to the hospital with specific instructions on how to "feed" the new mother with the chicken soup and the rice. He had to use a spoon and feed her. the new mother must not get up from the hospital bed.

Well, the young man arrived at the hospital and checked out his wife. When he heard her crying out in pain and still in labour, he took an about turn and cycled home with the tiffin carrier. when his mother saw him pale and distraught,she asked him what happened. He then realised that he had done the most embarrasing deed. His mother had to send the tiffin carrier to the hospital on foot herself as she did not know how to cycle and fed the daughter in law herself. She mumbled that she had a hopeless son.

But she was over the moon because she had a bouncing baby for a grandson!!

The story of the Hopeless Son spread far and wide and brought a lot of smiles to many understanding men and women.

My own stories were simple. The tiffin carriers would always remind me of how wonderful Foochow mothers were to their daughters and daughters-n-law from the moment the babies wereborn. It was such a comforting arrangement for mum to cook all the lovely confinement food and have them sent to the hospital. My mum would always carry the tiffin carrier to my hospital bed after I had been delivered . They would have the most important kampong chicken soup. This soup was a good anguish terminator. For generations they Foochows recomment this plain boiled chicken soup for the first few days of confinement.

So in a way I I had some very memorable meals out of these tiffin "trays" for my four babies who were all born in Sibu. My mum was different as she did not ask my husband to send the food to me. I often wonder if my husband might have committed some abominable acts by forgetting to send me the food or losing the tiffin carrier some where along the roads in Sibu!! Well, one never knows!!

One of my friends was fairly busy with her career. One day, her husband lovingly brought a tiffin carrier to her place of work. when she opened them happily, she was embarrased to find that there was nothing in the trays!! her embarrassed husband had brought the wrong tiffin carrier to her!! Some men don't even know the weight of an empty tiffin carrier!!

An aunt of mine used to carry a fully cooked meal of four dishes in a tiffin carrier to her bed ridden mother in law for years, every day, twice, by foot, until the old lady passed away. Her husband had actually left her and her six children. How much love can a woman have for her mother in law? My aunt is indeed an examplary daughter in law.

I believe there are lots of stories around the tiffin carrier, some are bitter, some are sweet but all are home stories which should be shared.

In South India and in Nepal, the term is generally used for between-meals snacks: dosas, idlis, etc.[4] Outside South India, like Mumbai, the word mostly refers to any packed lunch, often light lunches prepared for working Indian men by their wives after they have left for work, or for schoolchildren by their parents.[5] It is often forwarded to them by dabbawalas, sometimes known as tiffin wallahs, who use a complex system to get thousands of tiffin-boxes to their destinations.[6] Tiffin often consists of rice, dal, curry, vegetables, chapathis or "spicy meats".[3]

The novelty might be long gone but the're popular among those who are too busy to whip up a meal, yet wish to eat home cooked food. Tiffn meals are also known as Tingkat meals, Daily food delivery, Home cooked food or Bao Fu Sik (包伙食).

Working women, busy couples, mums juggling career and family, young bachelors in small kitchen-less apartments, would opt for the convenience of tiffin meals.

Tiffin is an old English word for light meal that was carried to India during the Colonial period. It has become the common term for lunch.

While these two tiffin boxes have been carried to an archaeological dig site similiar boxes are commonly used to send lunch to workers in cities every day.

Office workers in Mumbai leave early in the morning for work and their lunch follows them sometime later in the morning. In the middle of the morning the worker's wife packs his lunch, each 'bowl' containing a different dish. Rice will surely be in one container, dahl in a second. Other compartments may contain curd, pickle, parathas, vegetables, whatever makes up lunch for the day.

Each day some of the 4,000 to 5,000 dabawallahs pick up about 175,000 tiffin boxes at private homes, take them to the train station where they are packed into crates. When the trains reach the city other dabawallahs retrieve the boxes from the train and deliver them to their owners. Later in the day the empty tiffin boxes are retrieved from the offices and make the return trip home, often arriving before the worker.

The tops of the boxes are marked with special color codes which tell the often illiterate dabawallahs where the boxes live and work. The typical error rate is only once in around 8 million deliveries.

We are bombarded with the message to go green but many give lip-service to this call or take a could not care less attitude. If I can, I will ban the use of plastic bags and polysterene containers for take-away food especially those that are temperature-hot or contain hot soups, and bring back the once ubiquitious tiffin carriers.

Tiffin carriers used to come in beautiful enamel, (some plain and others with beautiful ornate floral designs), and in multiple tiers that can now command a place in any antique display unit. The nyonyas used to put birthday noodles into the various tiers and go round distributing the special noodles to friends and relatives to enable them to join in their birthday joy. Proud grandparents use the tiffin carrier to contain the nasi kunyit and chicken curry when going round announce a new born’s first month. If we had to buy some soupy stuff, the first and only option then was to bring out the tiffin carrier. Various types of food that need to be separated could be easily compartmentalized into the various tiers.

Aluminium tiffin carriers overtook the enamel ones in popularity as the enamel ones rusted easily once the enamel coating takes a beating. There are silver-coated ones from Thailand but the more common ones are now made of stainless steel from India, Thailand and even Malaysia and are more hardy.

However, everything is done in the name of convenience these days. Durians are opened and packed into polysterene containers. Home-delivered lunches and dinners come in plastic containers now. The list goes on. Shouldn’t the use of tiffin carriers be encouraged!!

Tiffin carriers can be used to pack our food in (separate the rice from the other condiments!) to bring to work (if you do bring food to work!!). Insist the chap-fun fellas put our food into our own tiffin carriers. Encourage the younger generation to bring along a tiffin carrier to buy food as it is not embarrassing to be seen with one. Washing it up should not be considered an inconvenience! Forgetting to bring one along when buying food is just an excuse. The tiffin carrier can most certainly be used for putting cold items as well. So don’t hesitate, bring out the tiffin carrier!
